PMO sources have revealed that one of the 35 people injured in Vijay Chowk after braving water-cannons, lathi-charges, and tear-gas shells includes Dr. Manmohan Singh!!
It seems that as soon as Home Minister Shinde briefed him on the rape issue, Dr. Singh swung into action by firmly ordering Shinde to ensure security for women in Delhi. Not content with having issued the necessary orders, Dr. Singh, who was beside himself with rage, sneaked out of South Block and swinging through a back alley, made his way into the multitude of protesters, ostensibly to pacify them
Unfortunately, he had omitted to take his security entourage with him and his feeble voice of moderation urging students to calm down was lost in the rising din as chants of ‘jiski Sonia mummy hai, who sarkar nikammi hai’ rang through Vijay Chowk on that historic evening. Soon the street activist in Dr. Singh came to the fore as he also joined the agitators, coining a new slogan ‘GDP ko maaro goli, hame chahiye security’ in the process.
Suddenly, a lathi-charge was ordered by the powers that be and before Dr. Singh could recover his wits, he found himself at the receiving of a bury Haryanvi cop’s stick, before a jet of water from a water cannon knocked him over. Fortunately, the cop’s senior managed to recognize Dr. Singh for he was and immediately a phalanx of security personnel whisked away the comatose Prime past the barricades into the secure environs of South Block.
Incidentally, this is Dr. Singh’s first tryst with street activism. The erudite scholar was nearly sucked into street protests in his home-town during the heady days of the Quit India Movement in 1942, although then also his grouse was against the freedom fighters, not the government.
However, Mrs. Singh is not taking any more chances and has asked PMO bureaucrats to make sure he doesn’t repeat such foolishness once again. “I just don’t get it. What was the need for him to try and talk to the crowd? He’s an economist turned PM, for Rabba’s sake, not a politician!! Dumb fellow,” she wailed, after hearing about his rash misadventure.
